Job Purpose
The Senior Project Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for the strategic execution and delivery of complex, multi-year mining infrastructure projects. The incumbent will provide the professional expertise required to translate conceptual designs into operational realities, ensuring that all project phases, from scoping to commissioning, are integrated seamlessly into the mine’s value chain. This role demands a high-level strategist capable of balancing rigorous technical standards with commercial efficiency to deliver world-class infrastructure that supports the mine’s long-term growth and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead projects from initial feasibility and scoping through to execution, commissioning, and final handover.
- Develop and maintain all project governance documentation in line with PMO standards and legal requirements.
- Oversee multi-million Rand budgets, approve invoicing, and provide accurate financial forecasting and cost-to-completion reporting.
- Coordinate internal resources (personnel and equipment) and external vendors to ensure alignment with the mine’s long-term strategic objectives.
- Implement robust project risk management strategies, identifying potential blockers and escalating critical issues to the Steering Committee and Board level.
- Act as the primary liaison between the client’s executive team, mine management, and cross-functional technical teams.
- Ensure all project deliverables meet the agreed-upon technical specifications, quality standards, and environmental requirements.
- Where required, support the Legal Appointees (MHSA) in ensuring total SHERQ compliance across all appointed project sites.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.Eng/B.Sc/B.Tech) — Mining, Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical.
- Professional Registration: PMP (Project Management Professional) or Pr.Eng/Pr.Tech Eng registration is highly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 10–12 years of experience in project management, with at least 7 years leading large-scale capital projects in the South African mining sector.
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in project controls and scheduling software (Primavera P6 or MS Project).
- Legal Knowledge: Thorough understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and standard forms of contract (FIDIC, NEC, or JBCC).
Key Skills and Competencies
- Proven ability to manage a diverse owners’ team, including project engineers, cost controllers, and safety officers.
- Strong expertise in budget management, financial analysis, and contract negotiation.
- Exceptional presentation skills suitable for reporting at Board and Steering Committee levels.
- Ability to drive results in a high-pressure, remote, and operationally complex mining environment.
Working Conditions
- Based at the mining operation in Rustenburg.
- Requires regular site visits and interaction with on-site construction and operations teams.
- Standard office hours with the flexibility to work extended hours during critical project phases.
