Job Purpose

The Construction Manager will be responsible for overseeing and directing all construction activities on-site at a major mining operation in Rustenburg. This role involves managing the end-to-end execution of infrastructure projects, ensuring they are completed on schedule, within budget, and in strict accordance with mine health, safety, and environmental standards. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for the strategic management and mechanical maintenance of the project’s yellow fleet to ensure maximum equipment availability and operational efficiency. The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team and act as the primary point of contact for project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the construction site, ensuring project milestones are met over the 3-5 year project lifecycle.
  • Enforce rigorous adherence to mine health and safety regulations (MHSA) and environmental protocols.
  • Monitor project costs and resources to ensure alignment with financial targets; report on budget variances.
  • Yellow Fleet Maintenance: Oversee the preventative maintenance, servicing, and repair schedules of all heavy earthmoving equipment to maximize fleet availability and minimize downtime.
  • Supervise and mentor site engineers, contractors, and artisans, fostering a culture of high performance and safety.
  • Coordinate between the client, consultants, and the mine’s operational management to ensure minimal disruption to active mining activities.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to ensure construction quality meets technical specifications and engineering standards.
  • Manage the procurement and allocation of materials, equipment, and labor in conjunction with the supply chain department.
  • Prepare and present detailed weekly and monthly progress reports, including risk assessments and mitigation strategies.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Professional registration (e.g., SACPCMP) is highly advantageous.
  • Experience: Minimum 8–10 years of experience in construction management, with at least 5 years specifically within a mining or heavy industrial environment.
  • Technical Skills: Deep understanding of mining infrastructure (e.g., shafts, processing plants, or tailings facilities) and proficiency in project management software (MS Project or Primavera).
  • Knowledge: Strong familiarity with South African labor laws, MHSA regulations, and JBCC or NEC contract management.
  • Driver’s License: Valid Code 8 (B) driver’s license.
